The ‘Alphonse Bertillon and the Identification of Persons, 1880-1914’ project aims to provide the general public as well as the academic community with new insights into Alphonse Bertillon and the history of judicial identification at the turn of the century. The core idea is to spread hitherto little-known knowledge on his background and career by making significant portions of his works available online. The project, which received wide support both in France and abroad from the research community (universities, research centers, journals, and research networks), is also meant to inform various issues that were at stake in judicial identity and forensic science at the time. In its first edition, the Bertillon Project gives access to various sources about Alphonse Bertillon, and offers an introduction on several topics illustrated with original written and iconographic documents. Academic papers are also accessible ; in addition to providing more food for thought, they highlight the dynamic nature of historical research in this area. At the same time, this project acts as a portal providing researchers with, in particular, manuscript and print archive references, as well as a bibliography of recent works on the identification of persons. In this spirit, we launch a call for contributions with the aim of gathering a collection of original academic papers covering the history of judicial identification methods in France, Europe, and globally, from 1880-1914, to be published on the Criminocorpus website in 2010. The ‘Alphonse Bertillon and the Identification of Persons, 1880-1914’ project will then be further enhanced by more archive documents and scanned print texts whose online publication shall be announced through in this blog. The first results of this collective and international effort will be showcased there as well.
